Gregor And Grete Sams Stuck Of Gender Roles - 1620 Words

Gregor and Grete Samsa: Stuck in Gender Roles The narration â€Å"Metamorphosis† by Franz Kafka, when examined through the feminist lens, shows society’s confining expectations towards both sexes in which conformity to the patriarchal structure is inescapable. The modern feminist movement created a need for inquiry into feminist issues; thus, as Gardner et al. outlined the objectives of feminist criticism, an unnatural confinement by a patriarchal society of both genders into preconceived roles becomes exposed (1269). The protagonist, Gregor Samsa, becomes a frightening example of what might happen to somebody who fails to adapt to this strict arrangement, while his sister Grete seizes the chance to empower herself within the narrow confines of her family, which mirror the rules of society. Her brother, unable to cope, ends up cornered and dehumanized as a complete â€Å"misfit† in the eyes of society. For a short while, at her brother’s expense, Grete develops and thrives, but her future is foreshado wed. She will subsequently adhere to society’s expectations, get married, and follow the typical life cycle of a patronized female. Franz Kafka’s â€Å"Metamorphosis,† then, allows the critical reader of feminist issues valuable insight to the workings of patriarchal oppression and gender stereotypes by presenting the affected characters’ actions and attitudes. The structure of the Samsa family is definitely patriarchal in style which means that Gregor’s father, as the oldest male of the

Monarchy is arguably the oldest form of government, which takes source from hereditary leadership in ancient tribal communities. Historically, monarchy was more focused and effective form of government than aristocracy and democracy. There are several types of monarchy. Absolute monarchy is the form of government which can be characterized by almost unlimited power of the ruler, including the right to change or withdraw the constitution. Â  Constitutional monarchy is a type of monarchy, in which the power of the ruler is bounded by constitution, country’s parliament is the legislature, and government is the executive. Also, there are parliamentary monarchy, dualistic monarchy, elective monarchy, and theocratic monarchy. The most known examples of monarchy are the dynasties of French and Russian Kings (the 9th – 19th centuries), as well as the members of the British Royal Family. Lately, such form of government as democracy prevails on global level, leaving only symbolic functions to the institution of monarchy. Nevertheless, there are still fully functional monarchies in such countries as Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Brunei, etc. Other known constitutional monarchies include Great Britain, Spain, Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden, Norway, Thailand, Japan and many others. James madison Essay Example For Students

James madison Essay James Madison begins his famous federalist paper by explaining that the purpose of this essay is to help the readers understand how the structure of the proposed government makes liberty possible. Each branch should be, for the most part, in Madisons opinion, independent. To assure such independence, no one branch should have too much power in selecting members of the other two branches. If this principle were strictly followed, it would mean that the citizens should select the president, the legislators, and the judges. But, the framers recognized certain practical difficulties in making every office elective. In particular, the judicial branch would suffer because the average person is not aware of the qualifications judges should possess. Judges should have great ability, but also be free of political pressures. Since federal judges are appointed for life, their thinking will not be influenced by the president who appoints them, or the senators whose consent the president will see k. Madison furthers, the members of each branch should not be too dependent on the members of the other two branches in the determination of their salaries. The best security against a gradual concentration of power in any one branch is to provide constitutional safeguards that would make such concentration difficult. The constitutional rights of all must check one mans personal interests and ambitions. We may not like to admit that men abuse power, but the very need for government itself proves they do, if men were angels, no government would be necessary. Unfortunately, all men are imperfect, the rulers and the ruled. Consequently, the great problem in framing a government is that the government must be able to control the people, but equally important, must be forced to control itself. The dependence of the government on the will of the people is undoubtedly the best control, but experience teaches that other controls are necessary. Dividing power helps to check its growth in any one direction, but power cannot be divided absolutely equally. In the republican form of government, the legislative branch tends to be the most powerful. That is why the framers divided the Congress into two branches, the House of Representatives and the Senate, and provided for a different method of election in each branch. Further safeguards against legislative tyranny may be necessary. In a representative democracy it is not only important to guard against the oppression of rulers, it is equally important to guard against the injustice which may be inflicted by certain citizens or groups. Majorities often threaten the rights of minorities. There are only two methods of avoiding evil. The first is to construct a powerful government, a community will. Such a will is larger than, and independent of, the simply majority. This solution is dangerous because such a government might throw its power behind a group in society working against the public good. In our country, the authority to govern comes from the entire society the people. In addition, under the Constitution society is divided into many groups of people who hold different views and have different interests. This makes it very difficult for one group to dominate or threaten the minority groups. Justice is the purpose of government and civil society. If government allows or encourages strong groups to combine together against the weak, liberty will be lost and anarchy will result. And the condition of anarchy tempts even strong individuals and groups to submit to any form of government, no matter how bad, which they hope will protect them as well as the weak. Madison concludes that self-government flourishes in a large country containing many different groups. Some countries are too large for self-government, but the proposed plan modifies the federal principle enough to make self-government both possible and practical in the Untied States. Analysis:In this essay, Madisons thoughts on factionalism are delineated clearly. As we observed earlier, he assumed that conflicts of interests are inherent in human nature, and he recognized that, as a consequence, people fall into various groups. He wanted to avoid a situation in which any one group controlled the decisions of a society. Free elections and the majority principle protected the country from dictatorship, that is, the tyranny of a minority. However, he was equally concerned about the danger that he thought was more likely in a democracy, that is, the tyranny of the majority. A central institutional issue for him was how to minimize this risk. Madisons solution characteristically relied not only on formal institutions, which could be designed, but also on the particular sociological structure of American society, which he took as a fortunate starting point for the framers of the new constitution. The institutional component in his solution was checks and balances, so that there were multiple entry points into the government an d multiple ways to offset the power that any one branch of the government might otherwise acquire over another. In this system, the constant aim is to divide and arrange the several offices in such a manner as that each may be a check on each other. These institutional arrangements were reinforced by the sociological fact that the Republic contained a multiplicity of interests that could, and did, offset one another: While all authority in it will be derived from and dependent on the society, the society itself will be broken into so many parts, interests and classes of citizens that the rights of individuals, or of the minority, will be in little danger form interested combinations of the majority. It is good that there are many group interests; that they be numerous is less important than that they be impermanent and shifting alliances whose components vary with the specific policy issue. Madison commenced the statement of his theory in Federalist 51 with an acknowledgement that t he have nots in any society are extremely likely to attack the haves, for like Hamilton the Virginian believed class struggle to be inseparable from politics. It is of great importance in a republic not only to guard against the oppression of its rulers, Madison writes, but to guard one part of the society against the injustice of the other. Different interests necessarily exist in different classes of citizens. If a majority be united by a common interest the rights of the minority will be secure. Madison, it is clear, had emancipated himself from the sterile dualistic view of society that was so common in the eighteenth century and that so obsessed Hamilton. Madison was one of the pioneers of pluralism in political thought. Where Hamilton saw the corporate spirit of the several states as poisonous to the union, Madison was aware that the preservation of the state governments could serve the cause of both liberty and union. Finally, the vastness of the United States, a fact that Ha milton considered the prime excuse for autocracy was recognized by Madison as the surest preservative of liberty. To assert after reading this passage that Alexander Hamilton wrote Federalist 51 is to imply first, that he was a magician in mimicking Madisons very words and tone of vote, and in the second place that he was the most disingenuous hypocrite that ever wrote on politics. No unprejudiced or informed historian would accept this latter charge against Hamilton. It is interesting to note that the Federalist papers are unique, as shown in this paper, because of the extreme amount of thought that was put into the design of the constitution, as shown in Madisons original thought process that were penned in 51. Many, if not most, changes in institutional design, they usually occur as the reactions of shortsighted people to what they perceive as more-or-less short-range needs. This is one reason the Constitutional Convention was a remarkable event. The Founding Fathers set out deli berately to design the form of government that would be most likely to bring about the long-range goals that they envisaged for the Republic. What is most unusual about Madison, in contrast to the other delegates, is the degree to which he thought about the principles behind the institutions he preferred. Not only did he practice the art of what nowadays is deemed institutional design, but he developed, as well, the outlines of a theory of institutional design that culminated in this essay. Federalists 51Supports: Partition of powersEach DepartmentShould have a will of its ownThus members of each should have little to do with appointments of members of the otherMember of each should be as little dependent as possible of the others for the emoluments annexed to their offices. .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .postImageUrl , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:hover , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:visited , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:active { border:0!important; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:active , .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661 .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u9020259633cd9f03cd6f006dbd267661:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: J.R.R. Philosophy and Heraclitus Essay Example

Philosophy and Heraclitus Paper Ancient Greek philosopher: Heraclitus Heraclitus was born in Ephesus. He belonged to an aristocratic family but refused to have a political life. His writing style is unusual, in that many of the surviving fragments are written in short and often cryptic phrases. He was known as the weeping philosopher. He was also referred to as the riddler or the obscure one, due to the puzzling nature of his writings, as well as the mocker or the reviler of the mob, due to his dislike for those who were not open-minded. Heraclitus has a huge contempt for humanity and politics. Therefore, towards the end of his life he left the city and went to live in isolation in the mountains in which he fed on plants and herbs. This caused him to contract dropsy which forced him to return to the city for treatment. He asked the doctors in a riddling way if they could change a rainstorm into a draught. When they failed to understand him, he buried himself in a byre, thinking that the dropsy would be vaporized by the heat of the dung. His attempt was not successful and he died at the age of sixty Heraclitus did not belong to a school of thought. He developed many important philosophical ideas that are still admired today. Among his most important ideas are flux and Unity of opposites. Heraclitus is called a monist (because he believes fire is the underlying principle) and an elitist (he believes most people are stupid). Heraclitus is said to have influenced Parmenides, Empedocles, Democritus, Plato, and the Stoics. Heraclitus said: You cannot step into the same river twice, for fresh waters are ever flowing in upon you. This statement is the essence of the concept of flux as it means that the river is always different every time you step into it. He looked at everything being in the state of change and that only change is permanent. He told people that nothing is the same now as it was before, and thus nothing what is now will be the same tomorrow. With this he planted the idea of impermanence into Greek thought, and indeed, after Heraclitus Greek philoso phy was not the same anymore. (Thomas K. ). Another influential idea is the unity of opposites. Heraclitus believed that opposites are the same and cannot exist without each other. He thought that opposites are identical. For instance, to Heraclitus, hot and cold are the same. Heraclitus saw unity as being harmony. To modern people, it seems silly to assume that opposites are identical but to the Greek, it completely makes sense. Hot and cold can both be expressed as a level of temperature, dark and bright as a degree of light. This is why opposites cannot exist without each other because when you say something is hot, it should be hot in comparison with something colder. The ideas of flux and unity of opposites are somehow connected to each other. It is sometimes argued that Heraclitus quote: You cannot step into the same river twice, for fresh waters are ever flowing in upon you. Is actually referring to the unity of opposites because the river is the same but at the same time it is different because new fresh waters flow on it. To conclude, Heraclitus was a very independent thinker and a huge critic of everything around him. His puzzling writings and deviant thoughts made him popular and influential among the later philosophers. His ideas of flux and the unity of opposites are still admired by todays philosophers. Unfortunately, not all his writings survived the years and only fragments of his writings exist. As much as we write about Heraclitus and try to understand him, in the end Much learning does not teach understanding. Obesity Nutrition and Foods Essay

Obesity Nutrition and Foods Essay Obesity: Nutrition and Foods Essay Kristy Bryant-Berg Writing 122 November 4, 2013 Obesity: Who is Responsible? America is one of the most obese countries in the world, and this has continuously become worse over the past 30 years. Eating healthier and exercising frequently can decrease the percentage of obesity in America, but does everybody have that opportunity? Low-income areas are filled with families who need to find ways to support themselves with the least of money they can, so they purchase what’s cheap, and what’s cheap is junk food. Whether it’s junk food in the grocery store, or junk food through fast food industries, these unhealthy options are the only options for many families due to the in-prices when compared to healthier options. The origin of this problem can be explained through subsidies, and they also provide the solution. The government needs to subsidize healthier crops, and not so much crops involved in processed foods, because it would allow a more equal opportunity for purchasing healthier items. Once these healthy options are readily available a nd affordable for all Americans, they are given the responsibility of managing their own health. By changing what is subsidized, it would provide cheap but healthy options for those who previously couldn’t afford it, especially for those in low-income areas. Families located in these low-income areas are, in a way, forced into obesity. Fast food franchises aggressively target these cities (Critser 42), offering abundant meals for a fraction of the cost that a full meal at a grocery store would cost. This leaves heads of households with the choice of purchasing a small amount of healthy food and risking their families being hungry, or supplying their families with plentiful meals that has high risks of heart disease and diabetes. Fast food companies aren’t concerned with the effects of their product, they care about maximizing their profit, and these inner cities and their increasing need for cheap meals is what fuels the fast food industry (Critser 42). Much of what we subsidize now, such as corn and soybeans, is used in processed foods, including fast food. The Un ited States Department of Agriculture supports these subsidies, yet at the same time promotes healthy eating habits. What needs to happen is the government must â€Å"begin subsidies to those who produce and sell actual food for direct consumption† (Bittman). Ironically, consumer habits essentially control what is subsidized because the government subsidizes what is highest in demand. Americans seem to have developed a thirst for unhealthy food items over the past few decades. By giving into this thirst, they’ve inadvertently changed the ways of the food industry. The Farm Bill is what determines what foods and crops are to be subsidized, and it is determined by the demand of consumers in America. In her discussion of the Farm Bill, Alice Waters states, â€Å"Between 1985 and 2000, the price of sugary and high fat foods declined nearly 25 percent, while the cost of fruits and vegetables grew by almost 40 percent† (Waters 31). While this statistic is alarming, it is not surprising. She proceeded to explain â€Å"†¦the farm bill offers little, if any, support to the California farmers who produce nearly half of our nation’s fruits, nuts, and vegetables†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Waters 31). An immediate question to this stat ement is why aren’t these farmers receiving more support if they’re supplying a sizable amount of the nations fruits and vegetables? These farmers still have to make a living, so they must sell their products at a higher price to stores, and the stores then sell it at an even higher price in order for them to make a profit. It’s a vicious cycle, but can be fixed if we begin subsidizing these farmer’s healthier crops, rather than crops such as corn and soybeans. While corn and soybeans appear to be a type of healthier crop, it is the way they are used in the production of foods that promotes unhealthy eating habits. Mark Bittman stated in his

Myth and Thomas Jefferson Essay Example for Free

Myth and Thomas Jefferson Essay Essay: Topic: Compare and Contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address† (Chapter 15 in Readings in United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, (Chapter 14 in Readings in United States History) â€Å"Do you want to know who you are? Dont ask. Act! Action will delineate and define you.† (By Thomas Jefferson). Thomas Jefferson, who was born on April 13 1743 and died on July 4 1826, was the son of a wealthy uneducated planter from Western Virginia. He was the first to go to College in his family and he attended the College of William and Mary. He was dreaming about a society where men would be judged by what they have accomplished and by their taste .He was the third president of the United States of America (From 1801 to 1809) and also the first United States Secretary of State (From 1790 to 1793 ).He was much more: founder of the University of Virginia. Philosopher, cofounder of the oldest political party in the nation, coauthor of the Declaration of Independence. In this essay, we are going to compare and contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s first inaugural address† (Chapter 15 in Readings in United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, (Chapter 14 in Readings in United States History). In his book â€Å"The Jefferson image in the American Mind (1960), the writer Merrill Peterson is basically showing how American’s people see Thomas Jefferson. They have always seen him as a particular man, a symbol for the United States of America .Therefore, many people took their time to find out something wrong about that man. The man who started criticizing him as probably the writer Leonard Levy’s in his Book â€Å"Jefferson and Civil Liberties: The Darker Side†. In Chapter 14 â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson†, Gordon Wood really talks about Jefferson’s personal life. Thomas Jefferson is described as someone who had passion for partisan persecution, someone who didn’t care about the civil liberties,  someone who thought he was morally perfect and used to judge people around him. In the chapter, they are comparing him to his friend James Madison. Thomas Jefferson wasn’t thinking about the country like Madison when he was taking decisions. While taking his decisions, he was mostly concerned about what his French friends would think of it than the needs of the American population. The main portion of Jefferson’s life, was his fight to abolish slavery. As it is written in this chapter, Thomas Jefferson hated slavery. He worked really hard to eradicate it in New Western territories. But apparently, he was never able to set all his slaves free. Many recent historians claimed that Jefferson’s acting toward Black people was very disgusting, revolting. Especially for someone who claimed that he wanted to eradicate slavery. During his life, he wanted to make sure that the eradication of slavery will be accompanied by the deportation of Back people of the country. For him, Black people living in a white’s man America was totally unbearable. He was â€Å"Racist†. In his mind, Black men were extremely inferior to White Not only in Body but also in mind. People were surprised to see hear him talk about freedom and control Black slaves at the same time. Most people started to think that he was a hypocrite. In 1802, James Callender, a political pamphleteer and journalist pointed the fat that Tomas Jefferson maintained Sally Hemings a Black Slave as a mistress and fathered her with various children. This was barely believable because everybody knew him as a man who always suppressed his passions. In addition to that, Thomas Jefferson was a man of the eighteenth century, an intelligent man, conventional, and enlightened. But he also had his own weaknesses. Jefferson was fully part of the Enlightenment in the United States of America. His desire to know everything and his open-minded character put him on the top of the American Enlightenment. Unlike in Chapter 14 (Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson), Chapter 15 (First Inaugural Address, 1801) is basically Thomas Jefferson’s speech which marks the abolition of one of the worst period in the United States of America. The First Inaugural Address of Thomas Jefferson is lionizing the most important election in the history as Thomas Jefferson was succeeding to John Adams as president. During 1790s, some divisions were created between the Federalists (Hamilton and Adams) and the Republicans (Jefferson and Madison) due to the opposition to Hamilton’s financial policies and polemics over foreign policy. Thomas Jefferson was  the first President to take office in the new capital city of Washington. In his speech, Thomas Jefferson says â€Å"Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names brethren of the same principle. We are all Republicans, we are all Federalists.† He is basically telling his Fellow-Citizens that even though there are some differences, both Federalists and Republicans are serving the same constitution and following the same principles. What is different is the way each of them interprets and apply it. He is calling for Union. Jefferson wants a government when no one will injure another; where each citizen will work. In his partisanship, the First Inaugural of Jefferson mingles the American past of Washington and some heroes into his different principles .By making his party’s victory a victory for all the country, the speech sets the standard for inaugural addresses. In Conclusion, we were ask to compare and contrast â€Å"Thomas Jefferson’s Inaugural Address† (Chapter 15 in Readings of the United States History) and â€Å"Hope and Heritage: Myth and Thomas Jefferson† (Chapter 14 in Readings of the United States History). We can undoubtedly say that Thomas Jefferson was a great Leader. It is therefore all the more important to see and distinguish where he had success and also where he failed. Whenever something is great, people will always try to find out the Bad in it and that’s what happened to Thomas Jefferson. But it doesn’t change anything to what he has accomplished for the United States of America. Till today, no other figure in the American history as reached that standard.

Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools Essay -- Argumentative Persu

Tax Dollars Should Fund Religious Schools The issue of whether or not to use tax dollars to provide private schools with vouchers has been controversial for many years now.   Many people feel that it is our governments obligation to provide private institutions with the proper funds, while others believe that if private schools inherit our tax dollars then it is violation of our constitution as it promotes a particular religion.   I think it is our government's responsibility to provide each and every school with tax dollars, regardless of its orientation.   Many reasons, especially popularity and success rates provide substantial evidence that private schools should be funded by government vouchers. The main concern of those who oppose the use of government money for private schools is whether or not it would be constitutional.   In the past, many Supreme Court cases have proven that school vouchers for private schools are constitutional.   For example in Board of Education vs. Allen it was established that providing funds for private schools does not violate the Establishment C...

Communication Skills Visual Aids And Personal Grooming Education Essay

In todays modern universe, there are assorted types of societal jobs, such as offense, larceny and equal force per unit area. These societal jobs are largely harmful and convey approximately negative impacts. However, one of the societal jobs – equal force per unit area, may be viewed as a positive force per unit area that motivates pupils to make good in school. Peer force per unit area is defined as a individuals ‘ influence towards another individual ‘s determination by coercing them to make something that they would otherwise would n't make, or coercing them to make something if they did non hold the bravery to make so. However, peer force per unit area can be a strong influence during pupil life when equals are rather of import to a pupil individuality.Main organic structureIn my sentiment, I agree that equal force per unit area is effectual in actuating pupils to make good in school as such that it is good for them. The first ground is, by seting force per un it area on pupils it can assist them force their head set to a higher measure to derive entry into reputable higher instruction institutions/colleges. In today ‘s universe, paper makings are really of import in finding the hereafter of a individual. To hold an added-value, the institute that a pupil is analyzing in or alumnus from is really of import. Peer force per unit area will promote healthy competition between pupils to obtain differentiation classs to be qualified to use for scholarship when they are come ining colleges. Therefore, this leads to the 2nd positive consequence equal force per unit area has on a pupil which is, it serves as a good preparation land for pupil to pull off their resources and program sagely. Besides being academically successful, peer force per unit area besides encourages pupil to fall in school activities. These maintain the pupil from societal ailments while populating a healthy and active life style. Involving in school activities such as e vent, societal assemblage, athletics twenty-four hours and charity work will reflect a good fillip for future occupation application. Besides, physical co-curriculum helps the pupils to remain alert during categories, being able to concentrate and absorb whatever that is being taught. In fact, equal force per unit area is one of the chief incentives for a pupil to pattern doing smart determination and good behaviour in a pupil life. For illustration, see that a pupil who is being surrounded with friends who are endeavoring for good academic consequences. This manner the pupil is pressured to make good academically every bit good as being supported and encouraged by his like-minded equals. This will assist the pupil to do wise determination in his pick of friends in approaching hereafter. Peer force per unit area besides motivates teamwork in the life a pupil. Undertakings and presentations in schools are usually performed in groups. To demo a sense of duty every bit good as being accredited as the best group, a pupil is healthily motivated to make the best in making his/her portion in a group assignment in order to non allow down the group. Socially awkward pupil can larn societal norms from their other classmates to suit into the schooling environment. A positive equal group in school will forestall pupils from prosecuting in harmful or hazardous behaviours by actuating the pupils to be more confident and act as a positive wise man ; puting a good illustration for their other equals to follow. Besides that, a small peer force per unit area can be a tool to actuate pupils to accomplishing great highs. For case, when a weak pupil is fighting with his surveies, his schoolmates can assist by promoting him in every small betterment he makes. This will non merely do the weak pupil feel motivated to analyze, but besides to better his friendly relationship with his friends. Therefore, this equal force per unit area is healthily promoting all the other pupils to emulate the well-bred pupil to avoid from falling into societal ailments. However, parents has a really of import function to play besides because good equal force per unit area must besides depend on the parents on how they control and how they teach their kids with the right manner of making thing alternatively of the incorrect manner such as, call on the carpeting them without listening to their kids account, physically crushing up their kids and much more. With all this sort of negative controlling and learning their kids, this is the clip when negative equal force per unit area comes in and it will finally do the kids lives harder and harder. When this occurs, pupils might non be concentrating good in school, nerve-racking, emotional, and disrespectful. If those negative equal has been interrupts the pupil ‘s head, their attitude would alter and will seek to pick up some bad influences such as smoke, imbibing and besides arising against the authorization. This full negative attitude may take to hapless classs and offense. Student may besides pic k up those bad wonts if they were non treated decently by their parent. Erstwhile pupils have to be pressured to blend with the proper crowd. In this instance, that is where equal groups are besides of import and helpful.DecisionIn my decision, parents must besides give positive equal force per unit area to their kids when they were little. Most of the people think that equal force per unit area is a negative and harmful â€Å" every act has the negative and the positive parts † but when it comes to positive equal force per unit area it is really a good force per unit area. Positive equal force per unit area truly benefits and helps a batch for pupil to be motivated in school and keeps them on path with their friends and surveies. It is besides of import to give a small push of force per unit area to assist them to accomplish their end and success in life for their hereafter and recognizing their end in the hereafter and to cognize how to distinguish the right and the incorre ct.Question 2IntroductionSince the 1890ss, computing machine has become a really utile and popular engineering ; today the computing machine has become a necessity in our modern old ages and computing machines help really much in pupil ‘s surveies and for the working grownup and so on. First of wholly, computing machine games are one of the chief grounds why adolescents and immature kids even grownups likewise are attracted to the computing machine. With modern engineering available now in this century, one can play a computing machine game through the Internet with the populace from far-off states. In my sentiment, I think that computing machine games would impact our life as a college pupil or non depends on the clip allocated for playing and the types of computing machine games played by the peculiar pupil him/herself.AMain organic structureFirst of all, I would wish to explicate the ground of why playing computing machine games will impact our lives as a college pupil. Bas ically, negative dependence towards the computing machine games normally fall to the pupil who does n't cognize how to pull off their clip decently and holding spent most of their clip in playing computing machine games will do them be given to lose their involvement and concentrate in more of import things like their surveies. Most college pupil likes to play computing machine games till midnight and the consequence of playing till midnight can do them to hold deficiency of kiping clip and will diminish their watchfulness and concentration in during categories. A lessening in watchfulness and concentration or focal point at college will impact their academic public presentation. Nowadays game developers are sharply presenting new and more sophisticated games. These games are strategized to light hungriness for triumph or satisfaction in the participant of these computing machine games. Therefore, each triumph fuels another impulse for a new challenge, taking to the college pupil co ntinually spending clip playing computing machine games. Apart from that, there are some computing machine games which are classified as â€Å" violent † or â€Å" aggressive † . These games may hold inauspicious consequence on the computing machine game participants. A pupil may be excessively absorbed into the practical universe computing machine games until they have the inclination of losing control of themselves and go more aggressive, imitating the violent characters in the â€Å" violence-type † computing machine game. Besides that, passing excessively many hours in playing computing machine games and non traveling out with friends will do societal jobs in the life of a college pupil. Some societal ailments are the pupil that is addicted to playing computing machine games will go diffident and introvert. Playing computing machine games does non affect any of the physical activity and the most physical parts are use while playing is merely custodies and fingers. Therefore, playing computing machine games may do the indolence of playing athletics such as football, badminton, and tennis and so on. Sometimes, as college pupils, speedy high-calories bites or debris nutrient which is really unhealthy nutrient becomes the pick of diet/food, because it is instant, delightful and the computing machine gamer can eat while playing computing machine games. This will take to an unhealthy life style and besides fleshiness jobs. After a long treatment of the negativeness of playing computing machine games, I can non wholly disagree that playing computing machine games will impact our life as a college pupil. This is because it besides depends on the assorted types of the games that they play and on how they manage their clip on playing. And now I would wish to explicate the ground why I think playing computing machine games will non impact life as a college pupil. First of all computing machine games has ne'er fail to come out with as a beginning of amusement, loosen uping, let go ofing emphasis for college pupils after a long twenty-four hours of surveies. Some computing machine games might besides develop us to do speedy determination and it besides helps us to believe â€Å" outside the box † and to be more originative. Computer games does non merely promote amusement but accomplishments, for illustration strategic games, the participant must hold the strong sense, planning or thought in order to w in the game such as how to equilibrate the resource, keeping confederations or supporting the metropolis against being onslaught by the oppositions. This may be applicable in a college pupil ‘s ain live, whereby they can larn to equilibrate their clip resources, their surveies resources every bit good as program their perusal agenda good. Besides that, cooperation and strong teamwork are more prevailing in computing machine games than of all time, computing machine games require all the participants to pass on efficaciously with each other in the squad ; for illustration following waies and executing the undertakings expected to the squad to accomplish triumph, whereby much like group presentation in college and so on. Besides that, difference between clip spent on playing computing machine games versus the clip spent in watching telecasting is that watching telecasting is wholly a inactive experience because Television viewing audiences merely turn on and get down to get down whatever is presented on that show. On the other manus, we are more active while playing computing machine games and have to utilize analytical thought accomplishments on work outing jobs. So over clip, the differences between disbursement clip on playing computing machine games to exert our encephalon is much more meaningful than watching telecasting which is merely sitting down. Another ground which is, most of the clip we begin a game at the easiest degree and by degree to level it becomes harder and harder and with our changeless practicing and easy edifice accomplishments, we have the assurance in managing more and more hard challenges. Since we lose nil in failure with playing computing machine games, in that instance, we do non fear that much of doing error and we tend to take more hazards and explore more. Possibly, playing computing machine games is much safer than holding us addicted to drugs, intoxicant and street racing in the existent universe, all this act will do our life much more danger and shorter so.DecisionIn decision, I think that playing computing machine games will non impact our life as a college pupil every bit long as they know how to maintain path of the clip that is spent on playing computing machine games. This is because computing machine games played with wise clip allotment are ways to loosen up our heads after a long twenty-four hours of surveies. Besides, computing machine games can learn us how to pull off our resources sagely, and to advance teamwork every bit good as train us to be more confident in taking hazards. Always remember that passing excessively much clip on computing machine games will impact our life as a pupil and besides will impact our wellness.

My Teacher, My Hero Essay

When talking about our own teachers and mentors, anyone would be glad to thank them, especially those who are successful and those who learned a great lesson from them. But, are teachers really that great? Aren’t they just a bunch of people teaching everyday? The people who are always giving a lot of homeworks and projects, making our life hard? Teachers are great. They teach us in all ways they could. They guide us through different challenges. They act as light when we’re on darkness. They’re affection strengthens students. They’re patience are unbelievable. For even though, we, students are acting childishly, they forgive us. They’re like a second mom to us. And especially, they love us like a true mother. Once, when I was still young, I had a very kind and loving teacher. And for me, she was the reason why I am here in my spot today. She was the building block of my knowledge. She’s my teacher on kindergarten. She’s strict, yes, but still very affectionate. She was the one who discovered I’m myopic. After discovering this, she told it to my mom and I was able to see the world clearly. She was also the one who always guides me through everything. She taught me how to read, write, count, and how to be strong in every circumstance I face. She taught me how to meet friends. I learned many lessons from her. She always taps my head whenever I learned something new. And in that small gesture, I know how much her affection is for me. She’s a person whom I can ask help from anytime I want. She’s a person willing to help a lost child to make her a successful one. And I’m very thankful to her. She was like my hero once and I know she’ll forever be one. Thanks to her, my parents discovered I’m myopic. Thanks to her, I learned how to make new friends. Thanks to her, I’ve been a good girl. Thanks to her, I learned how to eat veggies. And especially thanks to her, for being my hero, who saves me from any circumstance that surrounds me. I owe her so much yet all I can do is to thank her, to study hard, and to become a successful person someday, for her to be proud of me. If not because of you, I won’t be here where I am today. Thank you My Teacher, My Hero! I salute you, and I will always do.

Free Essays on Hidden Agression In Women

According to Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Odd, â€Å"There is a hidden culture of girls’ aggression in which bullying is epidemic, distinctive, and destructive† (Simmons 2000). When boys bully each other it is done with violence and physical acts. They tend to attack strangers or acquaintances (Simmons 2002). Girls attack within tightly knit networks of friends. This aggression is harder for teachers and parents to identify and increases the damage to the victims. Rachel Simmons says, †Behind a faà §ade of female intimacy lies a terrain traveled in secret, marked with anguish, and nourished by silence†(Simmons 2002). Everyday many girls are being threatened and tormented by girls they thought were their friends. Many of the stories I read came from girls who were bullied by their best friends. When a teacher thinks of a bully she thinks of a boy. When a girl says she is being bullied the teacher just says it is girls being girls and acting catty. â€Å"Studies have established that approximately 15 percent of students are either bullied regularly or are iniators of bullying behavior (Olweus, 1993). Direct bullying seems to increase through the elementary school years, and decline during the high school years. Also school size, racial composition, and school setting do not seem to be distinguishing factors in predicting the occurrence of bullying. Research shows that students who engage in bullying behaviors seem to have a need to feel powerful and in control. They often defend their actions by saying that their victims provoked them in some way. Bullies often come from homes in which physical punishment is used, children are taught to strike out physically as a way to handle problems and parental involvement are usually lacking. Some characteristics of bullies victimize others because they feel bad about themselves. Victims of bullies are usually anxious, insecure, and have low self-esteem. They won’t usually defend thems... Locutionary Act Definition in Speech-Act Theory

Locutionary Act Definition in Speech-Act Theory In speech-act theory, a locutionary act is the act of making a meaningful utterance, a stretch of spoken  language  that is preceded by silence and followed by silence or a change of  speaker- also known as a  locution or an  utterance act. The term locutionary act was introduced by British philosopher J. L. Austin in his 1962 book, How to Do Things With Words. American philosopher John Searle later replaced Austins concept of a  locutionary act with what Searle called the propositional act- the act of expressing a proposition. Searle outlined his ideas in a 1969 article titled Speech Acts: An Essay in the Philosophy of Language. Types of Locutionary  Acts Locutionary acts can be broken into two basic types: utterance acts and propositional acts.  An utterance act is a speech act that consists of the verbal employment of units of expression such as words and sentences, notes the  Glossary of Linguistic Terms. Put another way,  utterance acts are acts in which something is said (or a sound is made) that may not have any meaning, according to Speech Act Theory, a PDF published by Changing Minds.org. By contrast, propositional acts are those, as Searle noted, where a particular reference is made. Propositional acts are clear and express a specific definable point, as opposed to mere utterance acts, which may be unintelligible sounds. Illocutionary vs.  Perlocutionary Acts An illocutionary act refers to the performance of an act in saying something specific (as opposed to the general act of just saying something), notes Changing Minds, adding: The illocutionary force is the speakers intent. [It is] a true speech act such as informing, ordering, warning, undertaking. An example of an illocutionary act would be: The black cat is stupid. This statement is assertive; it is an illocutionary act in that it intends to communicate. By contrast, Changing Minds notes that perlocutionary acts are speech acts that have an effect on the feelings, thoughts, or actions of either the speaker or the listener. They seek to change minds. Unlike locutionary acts, perlocutionary acts are external to the performance; they are inspiring, persuading, or deterring. Changing Minds gives this example of a perlocutionary act: Please find the black cat. This statement is a perlocutionary act because it seeks to change behavior. (The speaker wants you to drop whatever you are doing and go find her cat.) Speech Acts With Purpose Locutionary acts may be simple utterances devoid of meaning. Searle refined the definition of locutionary acts by explaining they should be utterances that propose something, have meaning, and/or seek to persuade. Searle identified five illocutionary/perlocutionary points: Assertives: Statements that may be judged true or false because they aim to describe a state of affairs in the worldDirectives: Statements that attempt to make the other persons actions fit the propositional contentCommissives: Statements that commit the speaker to a course of action as described by the propositional contentExpressives: Statements that express the sincerity condition of the speech actDeclaratives: Statements that attempt to change the world by representing it as having been changed Locutionary acts, therefore, should not simply be  meaningless bits of speech. Instead, they should have purpose, either seeking to bolster an argument, express an opinion, or cause someone to take action. Locutionary Acts Do Have Meaning Austin, in a 1975 update of his book How to Do Things With Words, further refined the notion of locutionary acts. Explaining his theory, Austin said that locutionary acts, in and of themselves, did indeed have meaning, stating: In performing a locutionary act, we shall also be performing such an act as: Asking or answering a question; Giving some information or an assurance or a warning; Announcing a verdict or an intention; Pronouncing a sentence; Making an appointment, an appeal, or a criticism; Making an identification or giving a description. Austin argued that locutionary acts did not need further refinement into illocutionary and perlocutionary acts. Locutionary acts by definition have meaning, such as providing information, asking questions, describing something, or even announcing a verdict. Locutioinary acts are the meaningful utterances humans make to communicate their needs and wants and to persuade others to their viewpoint.

Managing crime part1 policing Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words

Managing crime part1 policing - Assignment Example 6360 2004). In general, the assignment focuses on the changing role of police and crime management measures over the years, discussing on the main functions of the police, and the increasing role of safer neighbourhood policing. The Changing Role: One of the major changes that have occurred in policing over the last 100 years is in the role that women have to play. In earlier times women represented negligible positions and roles in policing (Villiers 2009). As recorded, â€Å"during the first 100 years of law enforcement in the United States, women were formally excluded from employment in law enforcement† (Kurtz 2006, p.27). The situation has however changed over the years, with the present times giving greater opportunities and responsibilities to women. Thus while previously there was a clear discrimination among men and women with respect to their roles in policing, women are now offered higher ranks based on their performances. They now play an essential role in making d ecisions effectively improving the service of the police. Feminization is sincerely considered in the present times enabling police force to take into serious concerns the crimes related to rape, domestic violence and abuses, and child sex abuse (Villiers 2009). Another major change that has occurred in police service is in the relationship of the police with the security services that has effectively developed over the years. The police and the security services have started working in collaboration â€Å"with a major increase in the resources available to the police and intelligence agencies to deal with the terrorist threat† (Home Office 2009, p.62). Actions of counter terrorism have also increased with time (Staniforth and Sampson 2012). Also challenges in police service have increased over the years. With that the police forces, in the current times, try to use advanced measures for prevention and management of crimes (Murray 2000). It can thus be said that the advanceme nts and advantages that present day police service
